Hurricane Florence is approaching Northern Virginia and the DMV fast. Here at Christian Siding we asked our technicians to give us some quick and easy tips to protect your home from the hurricane. Being proactive with your home’s protection is ideal. You will be able to save yourself from some damage that can be caused by the storm.
Protect Your Home From the Hurricane
- Secure any loose objects outside your home. Loose objects such as a grill can slide around your deck or patio during the storm and cause damage. It is a good first step to secure all of these objects.
- Protect your home from flooding if possible. If you can try to set up a barrier to protect your house from flooding (sandbags often make a good barrier if stacked at least 2 feet high). If you cannot set up a barrier for your house then remember to unplug electronics to prevent a potential electrical surge.
- Take pictures before the storm, you want to have pictures of your roof, siding, and windows before the storm so that after you can submit them with insurance claims to prove storm damage.
- Guard your windows and doors. Boarding up your windows with storm shudders can reduce the likelihood of them shattering significantly.
- Inspect your roof before the storm to ensure the shingles aren’t loose. If they are your best option would be to use roofing cement to seal them and to call us after the storm to check on them and possibly provide any repairs.
- Trim your trees. One of the most common calls we receive after any storm is roof and siding damage due to tree branches hitting your house. Be sure to trim your trees before the storm hits to lower the likelihood of damage.
